History of Alaska European Bed and Breakfast
In 1968 Irene was a stewardess for Capitol Airways. She stopped over in Anchorage on the way to Vietnam on a soldier transport mission. Here she met a young doctor who was building the first medical clinic in the nearby young community of Eagle River. He was the only doctor for 10,000 Alaska residents at the time. He delivered over 5,000 babies. Irene stayed in Alaska and helped “Doc” with his clinic and they were soon married. They had three boys together. Irene went to work for the Municipality at Anchorage Convention and Visitors Bureau using her seven languages to build the international tour business from Europe to Alaska. She revealed an undiscovered land to the Europeans and taught the Alaskan tour community how to host them, making speeches all over Alaska. Within three years Irene went on to form Alaska Vacations International and was bringing large groups to Alaska from all across Europe. She became known as the Mother of Alaska. In 1989 Irene purchased the home that you are in now. During the ‘90s two of her sons were running a couple of bed and breakfasts near the airport and were often overwhelmed with guests. Irene helped out by opening her home to the “overflow” from the boys’ endeavors. After the first year it became obvious that she should have to have her very own B&B because Irene truly enjoyed visiting with the guests from all over the world. Alaska European Bed and Breakfast was born and has been operating ever since.
